IVIG is a multidisciplinary institution that develops studies and projects in many areas of knowldege with an emphasis on sustainability. Created in 1999 by the initiative of Faperj and the Secretariat for Science and Technology of the State of Rio de Janeiro, IVIG operates in a network with other programs at COPPE, units at UFRJ and other research institutions in Brazil and abroad.

It has around 100 researchers in the areas of energy, biofuels, transportation, infrastructure, natural resource management, and risk analysis and management, among others. Among the researches and the projects developed, those that stand out are the ones related to efficient energy production and use, which aim to reduce possible environmental impacts and risks of improper technology use.
